Roo & Pumpkin or Roo & Carrot? Two Roo Treats, Two Very Different Jobs

Both of our kangaroo treats start with the same thing: lean, 2% fat Australian roo. The difference is what happens next. Roo & Pumpkin Patties are flat, snappable and made for training. Roo & Carrot Strips are long and crunchy, made for slowing down and settling in. Same roo, two very different jobs.

So which one belongs in your pup's pantry? Here's the honest, pooch-parent version.

The quick answer

Meet the patty: Roo & Pumpkin

Cavalier sitting beside a bag of Roo & Pumpkin Patties

Patiently waiting for a patty. Very patiently. Mostly.

Our patties are hand-formed from roo and pumpkin, then slow-dehydrated until they're firm enough to snap. That snap is the whole point: one patty breaks into lots of little rewards, which is exactly what you want when you're asking for ten sits in a row.

Why pooch parents love them for training:

  • Easy to portion. Snap off a small piece for a quick “good dog”, or hand over a whole patty for a jackpot.
  • Pouch-friendly. Flat pieces sit nicely in a treat pouch without crumbling into dust.
  • Great for little mouths. Small dogs and puppies can have a piece sized just for them.
  • Snuffle-toy ready. Small pieces tuck neatly into a Snuffle Bakery toy for a sniffing game.

Pumpkin brings fibre and a gentle sweetness that rounds out roo's richer flavour. (Curious about pumpkin itself? Here's our guide to whether dogs can eat pumpkin.)

Meet the strip: Roo & Carrot

The new kid on the block: same roo, new crunch.

Roo & Carrot Strips are the newest member of the pack. Same lean roo, this time blended with real carrot and cut into long strips. They're crunchier and take a little longer to finish, so they feel like more of an occasion.

Where strips shine:

  • Settle-down time. A strip on the mat after a walk, while you make dinner, or when guests arrive.
  • Bigger dogs. Big mouths often enjoy something with a bit more length to it.
  • Crunch lovers. If your pup lives for the sound of a good crunch, this is their treat.

Carrot brings fibre and a natural sweetness many dogs love. (More on that in our guide to whether dogs can eat carrots.) Strips can be broken into pieces too, but if you mostly want tiny training bites, the patties make life easier.

Why roo at all?

Kangaroo is a lean red meat, and for a lot of Australian dogs it's something they've simply never eaten before. That makes it what's called a novel protein, which is why it's a popular pick for pooch parents rotating away from chicken or beef. We go deep on this in Is Kangaroo Good for Dogs? and Kangaroo vs Chicken Dog Treats.

One honest note: if your dog has a diagnosed allergy or a sensitive tummy, have a chat with your vet before adding any new food, roo included. Our guides to signs of food allergies and treats for sensitive stomachs are a good place to start, and so is the RSPCA Knowledgebase.

How ours are made

Both roo treats are made the same simple way: human-grade Australian kangaroo, one vegetable, nothing else. We make them in small weekly batches in our Melbourne kitchen and slow-dehydrate them. No grains, no fillers, no preservatives. If you can't pronounce it, it isn't in the pouch.

How much roo is too much?

Even the best treats are treats. A common guide from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association is to keep all treats and extras to about 10% of your dog's daily food. Snapping patties into smaller pieces is an easy way to reward often without overdoing it.

✅ Pooch parent checklist

  • ✅ Training or small dog? Patties.
  • ✅ Downtime or a crunch lover? Strips.
  • ✅ New to roo? Start with a few pieces and see how your pup goes.
  • ✅ Diagnosed allergy or tummy issues? Check with your vet first.
  • ✅ Keep treats to around 10% of the daily diet.
  • ✅ Store opened bags airtight: about 2 weeks in the pantry, 4 weeks in the fridge or 3 months in the freezer.

Frequently asked questions

Are both roo treats made from the same kangaroo?

Yes. Both use the same lean, 2% fat Australian kangaroo. The only differences are the vegetable (pumpkin or carrot) and the shape.

Which roo treat is better for training?

The Roo & Pumpkin Patties. They snap cleanly into small pieces, so one patty goes a long way in a training session.

Which is better for big dogs?

Many bigger dogs enjoy the length and crunch of the Roo & Carrot Strips. Patties work for big dogs too, especially for training.

Can puppies have kangaroo treats?

Once your puppy is settled on solid food, small pieces are usually fine. Snapped patties are the easiest size for little mouths. Our puppy treats guide has more tips, and your vet is the best person to ask about very young pups.

Can I mix both in the same order?

Absolutely, and it can save you money. Mix any four or more 100g treat bags in Build Your Bundle and save up to 15%. Or grab The Whole Pantry, which includes both roo treats plus our other three recipes.

Is kangaroo good for dogs with allergies?

Kangaroo is a novel protein that many dogs haven't eaten before, which is why some pooch parents try it when rotating proteins. Every dog is different, though, so if your dog has a diagnosed allergy, talk to your vet before trying anything new.

How should I store them?

Keep opened bags sealed and airtight: about 2 weeks in the pantry, 4 weeks in the fridge, or up to 3 months in the freezer.

So, patty or strip?

If you're training, treating a small dog or filling a snuffle toy, go with the Roo & Pumpkin Patties. If you want a crunchy reward for downtime, the Roo & Carrot Strips are your pup's new favourite. And if you can't choose, don't. The Pantry Sample Bag has both, so your pup can cast the deciding vote. 🦘🐾
